Sailing Home

Hello my friends! I hope you all had a great weekend. We ended up not going to the lake this weekend. In a way I wish we had as it is not smoky there like it is here. Although that can change very quickly with all of the fires in BC.

Today's card was made for Doug's uncle. He is the baby of the family and will be turning 80 towards the end of this month. I don't know him very well so it was a bit of a struggle to come up with an idea for his card. Although, he did come to the lake last weekend for a visit and we had some great chats. He has done a lot of travelling so this is what I came up with.

I started with a piece of Basic White cardstock that I did a lot of ink blending on using the Blending Brushes. I added Pool Party ink to the bottom half of the cardstock. Over top of that, I added some Balmy Blue ink and then added some splotches of Misty Moonlight ink. I was going for an ocean look and I think I achieved it.

I used the Layering Circle dies to cut a small circle out of a scrap piece of cardstock. I then laid a Post-It note over the bottom portion of the circle. I laid this on my card front where I wanted the sun to go. I used the Blending Brush to apply Bumble Bee ink inside of the circle. When I lifted the circle up, it looked like the sun was setting. I added some more Bumble Bee ink on the ocean to be the reflection of the setting sun.

I added some very light Balmy Blue ink to the sky. I let some of the white show through so it would look more like a sky. I laid a strip of scrap cardstock across the whole card front at the line where the sun met the water. I used my Blending Brush to add a very light layer of Balmy Blue ink so that there was a defined horizon line.

Over top of the horizon line, I stamped the larger sail boat from the Sailing Home stamp set using Tuxedo Black Memento ink. I coloured the sail boat in using Stampin' Blends. I used Soft Suede to colour the boat and Real Red to colour the sails. I also used the Tuxedo Black Memento ink to stamp the seagulls over top of the sun.

I matted this piece onto a piece of Basic Black cardstock. I wrapped the black Baker's Twine (from the Baker's Twine Essentials Pack) around this three times and tied it into a knot. I stamped my sentiment from the One Happy Family stamp set using Tuxedo Black Memento ink on a piece of Basic White cardstock. I used the Messages Die to cut it out. I added this piece to my card front over top of the knot using dimensionals. The Messages Die is one large die that cuts out 23 different shapes at one time. It coordinates with the Merry Messages stamp and the Many Happenings stamp. These are both large stamps with many different sentiments that stamp at one time.

I used the Playful Alphabet Dies to cut out an 80 from some Basic Black cardstock. I attached this to the upper right corner using black dimensionals. Did you know that Stampin' Up! carries black dimensionals? I often forget to use them but they are perfect for when you want to pop up something that is either black or dark coloured. That way you don't notice the dimensionals as much as you would if you used the white ones.

To complete my card, I attached the card front on to a Balmy Blue card base using dimensionals.
